On 23 December we shared our Christmas card… the next day we had very bad news. As you know, at the CRPL, Lwiro Primates have been fighting for weeks against a strong respiratory infection of viral origin that has affected many of the chimpanzees. It is not uncommon at this time of year for viruses to strike both animals and humans in the Lwiro area. But this year the virus has been so strong that there have been 7 chimpanzees in critical condition and has caused a tireless struggle of the whole team to cure them (keeping watches, anaesthesia, treatments,…).

Unfortunately, and despite having left it behind… We regret to announce the death of the little “Garamba”, who arrived in 2015 after the loss of his mother at the hands of poachers in the area of Garamba National Park. He has always been a very noble animal, who avoided conflicts and gave support to other little ones. He is very much missed by everyone, chimpanzees and humans.

From SOS Primates we send kind regards to the team, we thank them for their enormous effort, as well as to all of you who have made extra contributions to help in the treatments due to this viral infection. We also embrace his  sponsor Gemma Domenc who has always dedicated kind words to him. And our warmest greetings to “Garamba” who, from wherever he is, will continue to watch over his playmates so that they don’t fight.
