Last November we sent to Liberia 95 kg of equipment donated by the Barcelona Zoo for the caretakers of the Libassa Wildlife Sanctuary — LiWiSa, the first and only animal rescue center in said country. This organization aims to rescue, rehabilitate, and liberate, when it is possible, the fauna that arrives at the center.
It opened in 2017 and, since then, more than 800 animals have arrived, approximately half having been liberated.
The species that enter are diverse, including amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals, comprising pangolins and primates of 7 different species, such as Elio (in the photo), a gray mangabey offspring who became an orphan after losing his mother due to poaching.
The center not only works for wildlife conservation but also for the local community. It carries out educational programs to promote the habitat and its flora and fauna.
SOS Primates manages and sends the material donated by the zoo to wildlife recovery centers. This case was not easy to coordinate since the trip included a journey by road and boat, and the entire process involved a lot of time. Despite the challenges, we are especially happy to see that Libassa has sewn its logo on the uniforms, being the first to do so.
In the photos, you can see some of the workers in uniforms carrying out their tasks.
Many thanks to everyone involved; to the Barcelona Zoo, Libassa (especially Susan Wiper, its Director) without forgetting the SOS Primates team who works altruistically on this uniform project.
If you travel to any of the countries where there are wildlife recovery centers, contact us to help bring this valuable material to them. More information at: info@sosprimates.org
